HIV in 2020: Equity Demands Action

HIV in 2020: Equity Demands Action

JSI is committed to working with our partners and across our organizations to dismantle structural racism, which drives health disparities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has stretched and challenged our public health programs in sobering ways, exposing fundamental inequities in our health system and their resulting disparities. Through COVID-19, we continue to witness the devastating consequences of racism and oppression on people’s health. At the same time, there is heightened attention in the U.S. and around the world of the pervasive injustices committed against Black people, including violence and police brutality.

JSI is committed to working with our partners and across our organizations to dismantle structural racism, which drives health disparities. Bisola Ojikutu, MD, JSI care and treatment advisor, discusses the intersection of these issues and opportunity to take action in her article “Calling out Racism as the Root Cause of Health Disparities Must Be the New Status Quo.”
As we respond to COVID-19 and elevate discussions of health inequities and social injustices, we are also gearing up for AIDS2020. JSI is proud to present two oral presentations and 15 posters in addition to a satellite session we are hosting on Using Human-Centered Design to Improve Outcomes across the Continuum of Care. JSI is also presenting three posters at the COVID-19 Conference. Learn more about JSI’s COVID-19 response and where you can find JSI at AIDS2020
Frontline HIV Workers: A resource for COVID response in South Africa
The Government of South Africa implemented one of the world’s most stringent lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in tandem with an ambitious, large-scale community COVID-19 screening program. Like other PEPFAR/USAID partners, our staff are demonstrating how HIV investments strengthen the health system: assisting with the COVID-19 response while simultaneously protecting gains in HIV epidemic control.
Supporting Access to Health Coverage during COVID-19
HIV providers in the U.S. are concerned about how COVID-19 is disrupting health care access. In response, JSI’s Access, Care and Engagement Technical Assistance Center (ACE TA Center) shared information about health coverage options with HIV providers across the U.S., highlighting financial assistance for people with HIV, health coverage access options including Special Enrollment Periods, and coverage for COVID-19-related health concerns.
