We are pleased to share with you the 4th IAPHL quarterly supply chain resource review. In this issue, we consulted a number of SCM information repositories, academic, private sector, and SCM experts to select for you the following resources that we hope will inform you, challenge you and keep you thinking how you can improve your own practice and the productivity of the supply chain you work in.
i. Article: Insight into Seminar topics for the 2019 Supply Chain & Logistics Summit & Expo (Supply Chain Brain)
Summit & Expo is one of the most established events of its kind in Europe. Now in its 21st year, it is a highlight in the calendar where world-class organizations meet to maximize efficiency and minimize costs through supply chain strategies of the future.
ii. Article: DHL Introduces New Express Mobile App to Sub Saharan Africa (Supply Chain Brain)
DHL Express has announced the launch of a mobile platform that will allow its customers in Sub Saharan Africa to track and coordinate the delivery of their shipments with greater ease and convenience. The DHL Express Mobile app has now launched in eight African countries, and a further 40 countries are to be live by the end of 2020.
iii. Resource: Improving the Availability of Quality Oxytocin (GHSC-PSM)
Oxytocin for prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) helps ensure the health of women globally. However, these benefits are dependent on women having access to quality oxytocin injection products. On this Key Initiatives web page, the USAID Global Health Supply Chain Program-Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) project provides links to resources, results from postmarketing surveillance studies, and more.
iv. Journal Article: Malaria case management commodity supply and use by CHWs in Mozambique (Malaria Journal)
CHWs provide preventive care and integrated community case management (iCCM) to people with low healthcare access worldwide. This project evaluated the current composition, use, and delivery of malaria iCCM kit commodities in Mozambique—rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and artemether–lumefantrine (AL) treatments—to better tailor existing resources to the needs of CHWs in diverse practice settings.
v. Article: Entrepreneurship on the Rise in the Medical Supply Chain in Africa: A Tale of Four Pharmacy Disruptors
(Center for Global Development)
The IFC estimates that by 2030, developing countries will need up to $210 billion per year in new investment for health care assets to meet the growing healthcare demands of the SDGs. Here we look at how entrepreneurialism is being leveraged in the pharmacy and supply chain space.
vi. Guide: ASCM Enterprise Certification Overview: The Industry’s First Corporate-Level SC Designation (ASCM) This program aims to empower organizations to reach goals, improve results, and be more competitive in today’s global business world. This unique designation incorporates Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) content and all certification bodies of knowledge.
vii. Article: Healthcare Lessons from Nigeria for Supply Chain Professionals (SAPICS)
A supply chain membership platform for the private sector in Nigeria has strengthened private sector spending for public health. Azuka Okeke, who pioneered the project, provides her experiences and insights.
viii. Article: Q&A: Adapting Business Strategies for Better Healthcare Supply Chains (WDI)
This article presents an interview with Michael Krautmann Research Manager in WDI’s Healthcare sector. He shares his experience in seeking to build more sustainable health supply chains in low and middle income countries.
ix. Report: GAVI Study – Outsourcing the Distribution Component of Vaccine and Medicine Supply Chains (GAVI)
This report focuses on how to outsource the physical distribution of vaccines and medical products to a private sector Logistics Service Provider (LSP) in sub-Saharan Africa. It analyses existing approaches to outsourcing, the challenges encountered and lessons learned.
