Immunization @JSI - Building Equitable & Strong Health Systems #VaccinesWork

Welcome to the quarterly Immunization @JSI newsletter.

Immunization programs around the world face both new and familiar challenges to prevent life-altering diseases. Whether it is a COVID-19 vaccine or routine childhood immunization, vaccines bring us closer to giving everyone a chance to pursue full, healthy lives. JSI is committed to assisting countries to build equitable and strong health systems that support people’s well-being. This edition includes our reaction to recent global immunization coverage data and highlights of our work.

FEATURED WORK

Largest Global Immunization Backslide in 30 Years after COVID-19 Pandemic - What Can We Do?

COVID-19 has significantly affected global health, and newly released data demonstrate significant immunization coverage reductions in most countries. JSI’s Lora Shimp outlines the actions and commitment needed to restore and strengthen routine immunization globally.

Digital Tool to Improve Childhood Immunization Program and Health Care System

The Ethiopia Ministry of Health has partnered with JSI, Mastercard, and Gavi to implement the Mastercard Wellness Pass, digitizing the childhood immunization program and health care system to ensure consistent and improved service delivery to parents and children across health facilities. Read more about JSI’s USAID-funded Ethiopia Digital Health Activity.

Analyzing Immunization Program and Supply Data for Decision Making

An article in the journal Global Health: Science and Practice and a recent webinar discuss approaches to expand equitable routine immunization services to reach zero-dose and under immunized children in Ethiopia and strengthen the health system. The new process and tool triangulates immunization program and supply data for use at regional levels through the UI-FHS project.

Putting People at the Center of USAID Immunization Programs

USAID invests in the science and technology of new vaccines, but they also recognize the importance of putting people at the center of immunization work and helping everyone receive lifesaving vaccines no matter where they live. Read how, through three local leaders in India, Mozambique, and DRC, the JSI-managed USAID MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity project is building community trust in vaccines. In Africa, the JSI-managed USAID DISCOVER-Health Project is Leading the Charge in Support of Zambia’s COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign. USAID also featured JSI’s work in The Foot Soldiers Driving COVID-19 Vaccinations in Zambia.

Guide: Human-Centered Design for Tailoring Immunization Programmes

Reaching people who are underserved by immunization programs requires locally tailored and people-centered strategies. Human-centered design, as this guide illustrates, helps district- and health facility-level staff diagnose barriers to vaccine uptake and co-design solutions that incorporate end-user perspectives.
