Lastly, February marked the first time in nearly a decade that a child in our country lost their life to measles. This heartbreaking loss serves as a stark reminder of the critical role immunization information systems (IIS) play in preventing and managing outbreaks. IIS help public health officials identify areas with low vaccination rates, allowing for targeted interventions and resource allocation. They support providers in ensuring patients receive the vaccines they need and empower individuals by giving them access to their immunization records.

While this loss is devastating, it underscores the importance of maintaining strong immunization systems and outreach efforts. We continue to support communities in making informed decisions that protect public health and save lives.

Looking Ahead:

• March 3–7, AIRA is attending the HIMSS25 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada
• The AIRA Board will meet in person March 10–14 in St. Paul, Minnesota
• The March Discovery Session will be held on March 24

Award Nominations Close Friday!

The AIRA 2025 National Meeting award nomination period closes this Friday, March 7! To nominate a colleague, friend, or jurisdiction, simply complete the AIRA 2025 National Meeting Awards Nomination form. Don’t miss this chance to recognize those who are making a difference.

If you know someone who has recently retired or is retiring this year, nominate them for the Legacy of Excellence Recognition by April 18 at 11:59 p.m. ET. This is a chance to honor those who have dedicated their careers to the advancement of IIS and public health.

AIRA, in collaboration with SYADEM, is pleased to invite you to the first meeting of the International Vaccine Coding (IVC) Initiative completely in Spanish. This inaugural hour-long online event is designed for professionals working with or interested in vaccine coding. It will feature speakers from the United States and associated networks in Latin America, including the Uppsala Monitoring Centre, creating a collaborative platform to share knowledge and establish connections.

Join us on Monday, March 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. ET for an engaging Discovery Session where we explore Michigan’s innovative approach to evaluating the issuance of digital birth credentials using digital trust technology. In this session, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) will share insights into the benefits of issuing vital records as digitally verifiable credentials, gained through testing. Learn how digital birth credentials can streamline access, enhance security, and offer greater convenience for the issuing office, parents, and the school systems that rely on these records.

This presentation will cover:

• An overview of NAPHSIS: A member-based organization that provides national advocacy, technical assistance and training, educational programming, and resources to assist and promote the use of vital records.
• Expedited access & enhanced security: The ways digital birth credentials provide faster access, improved security, and greater convenience compared to traditional paper documents.
• Best practices: Key strategies for successfully issuing digital credentials within the vital records ecosystem.
• Challenges & lessons learned: Real-world insights from Discovery Sessions, including challenges encountered and lessons learned from an educational pilot use case.

Great news for immunization-centric patient care! On February 24, AIRA hosted a Discovery Session on California IIS Data in Action: Insights into Flu Vaccine Effectiveness. During this Discovery Session, Josh Quint, of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), discussed how California is leveraging immunization data to estimate influenza vaccine effectiveness. This presentation shares CDPH’s findings and allows the audience to hear insights from California’s experience, including the challenges and lessons learned along the way.
