We understand there are questions and uncertainties about how the election outcomes might impact our community. While the specific effects remain unclear, we can anticipate that change will happen and that it will likely impact our community in meaningful ways. We’re here to face these changes together. October’s journey included a Discovery Session, Insights from 20 Million Immunization Data Exchanges Between VA and IIS. This was held on October 28 and provided a national perspective on data exchange between the Veterans Affairs agency (VA) and IIS. A big thank-you to the VA and to the Ohio IIS for sharing their valuable insights on data exchange! You can catch the recording if you didn't have a chance to join us live. October also brought the exciting news that registration is now open for the AIRA 2025 National Meeting. This year, we are kicking things off a day early with pre-conference workshops, the opening plenary, and the networking reception on Monday, April 28. You can register for the pre-conference workshops when registering for the meeting. And don’t forget to submit your abstract for consideration! The Call for Abstracts closes November 17 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
We attended the STC Thought Leadership Consortium (TLC) from October 1–3. The TLC explored a range of learning opportunities, scaling both national and local agendas. The importance of population health, partnerships, and pharmacy were the hot topics that wove through each presentation and conversation. STC made clear that it is committed to focusing on ensuring the stability of current applications, investing in different Java developers, taking a hard look at making systems scalable, sustainability, reliability, AART compliance, security, and navigating the future.
On October 23–24, the ACIP meeting took place, and the following key recommendations were approved by majority vote.
- Pneumococcal Vaccines
ACIP recommends a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) for all PCV-naïve adults aged ≥50 years.
- COVID-19 Vaccines
In addition to the previously recommended 2024–2025 vaccination:
- ACIP recommends a second dose* of 2024–2025 COVID-19 for adults ages 65 years and older.
- ACIP recommends a second dose* of 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 6 months to 64 years who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.
- ACIP recommends additional doses (i.e., 3 or more doses) of 2024–2025 COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 6 months and older who are moderately or severely immunocompromised under shared clinical decision-making.

- Meningococcal Vaccines
ACIP recommends MenB-4C (Bexsero) be administered as a two-dose series at 0 and 6 months when given to healthy adolescents and young adults aged 16–23 years based on shared clinical decision-making for the prevention of serogroup B meningococcal disease.
ACIP recommends MenB-4C (Bexsero) be administered as a three-dose series at 0, 1–2, and 6 months when given to persons aged ≥10 years at increased risk for serogroup B meningococcal disease (i.e., persons with anatomic or functional asplenia, complement component deficiencies, or complement inhibitor use; microbiologists routinely exposed to N. meningitidis isolates; and persons at increased risk during an outbreak).
- 2025 Immunization Schedules
Both the Recommended Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule, United States, 2025 and the Recommended Adult Immunization Schedule, United States, 2025 were approved.

The Call for Abstracts will close on Sunday, November 17, 11:59 p.m. ET, and speaker notifications will be sent on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Submit your abstract to be considered for a standard breakout presentation or to lead a group discussion. Join AIRA for an M&I Discovery Session: Patient Matching | A Town Hall

On Monday, November 18 at 4 p.m. ET, discover and discuss the next steps for Patient Matching – HL7 as part of AIRA’s Measurement and Improvement (M&I) initiative. During this interactive Town Hall, AIRA staff members Damon Ferlazzo and Eric Larson will review the draft Measures and Tests for Patient Matching – HL7 document with the IIS community.
What to Expect:
- Overview of M&I and the measurable concept of Patient Matching – HL7
- Preliminary findings from IIS participation in Testing & Discovery
- Proposed methodology and measures to assess IIS alignment with functional standards

What: Please join us at our IIS Data Analyst Collaborative (IDAC), an opportunity for IIS data analysts to share, discuss, and learn from their peers. These quarterly one-hour meetings provide participants with an opportunity to ask questions, share experiences, celebrate successes, and more! In November’s IDAC session, we will discuss real versus artificial coverage gaps, with an emphasis on equity.
Who attends: Anyone who supports the extraction, analysis, and interpretation of immunization coverage rates in their jurisdiction is invited to participate.

Public Health Data Modernization Workshop Report

Earlier this year the HIMSS24 Global Health Conference and Exhibition, in collaboration with the Electronic Health Record Association (EHRA), American Immunization Registry Association (AIRA), Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), hosted a Public Health Data Modernization Workshop. The workshop aimed to engage participants on the current state of public health data modernization, explore key challenges and priorities, and strengthen connections between the public health, health care, and IT communities. Discussions highlighted partnerships, public policy, funding opportunities, and the role of TEFCA in advancing public health information exchange. Important Changes Ahead: Smarty License Upgrade

Important changes are coming to the Smarty address cleansing service license currently provided by AIRA to members through a partner agreement. Beginning late November 2024, AIRA’s license will be upgraded from the legacy Standard Edition of the US Address Verification service to the Core Edition of the US Address Verification service. This transition to the Core Edition provides additional benefits, including enhanced matching and access to 20 million non-USPS addresses. Non-postal addresses are locations where people live and work. These addresses are places where USPS does not deliver mail but where packages can be delivered.
Once the license upgrade is complete, Smarty users will need to update their API call to Smarty. We will share more detailed information in the coming weeks so please stay tuned for more updates as we begin the transition to the updated service!
