Executive Director's Update

Greetings and happy fall!

October went as quickly as it came, and it seems that Thanksgiving will be here before we know it. Here at AIRA, we have had a busy month preparing for the new year. Already we have so much to look forward to. The AIRA 2023 National Meeting will be held in May and the festivities kicked off with opening the Call for Abstracts on October 31. Submit your abstract to be considered for a breakout presentation or to lead a group discussion.

This month marked the first AIRA board meeting with our new board members as we began our preparations for the 2023 year. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met in-person on October 19 and 20 to develop recommendations for a 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for adults, harmonize and approve 2023 immunization schedules, and review data on vaccines coming down the pike, including chikungunya, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), meningococcal, and dengue vaccines.

A copy of the Data Use Agreement (DUA) for Sharing Routine Immunization Data with CDC was distributed to jurisdictions on October 7. CDC's ISD requests that jurisdictions review and sign the DUA by Friday, November 18, 2022, to facilitate submission of data as early as January 2023. With this, CDC is enhancing its efforts to capture data from all IIS to help make informed and timely public health decisions.

According to the CDC, 57 jurisdictions have reported 1,012,283 doses of monkeypox vaccine administered, as of October 25. AIRA will continue to update our monkeypox webpage with relevant information as it becomes available. We understand the magnitude of work involved in this effort and we commend your unwavering dedication to ensuring the health of our communities.

Before the holiday hustle and bustle is upon us, I hope you’re able to pause and find some time to slow down. As always, please let us know how we can support you and your teams.

Rebecca Coyle, MSEd

Executive Director

Onboarding Shared Services Fall Training Recap

AIRA’s Onboarding Shared Services (OSS) team recently completed the fall 2022 presentation of the Provider Organization Onboarding for IIS course. This course was created to help build or enhance participants’ capacity to conduct onboarding in alignment with the Onboarding Consensus-Based Recommendations. Overall, 176 staff/representatives from 44 jurisdictions and 7[MB1]  partner organizations participated in 6 weekly sessions between September 7 and October 12. After the 6 sessions, a course evaluation was completed by 89 (51%) of the participants. From the evaluation, 97% of respondents either agreed or strongly agreed the course was high-quality and would recommend the course to a colleague.

AIRA’s OSS team will offer a second iteration of the Provider Organization Onboarding for IIS course in the spring of 2023. Many thanks to our fall 2022 participants for their time and contributions during the course!

AIRA Board Spotlight

The Board Spotlight is a new addition to the Monthly Update, providing both AIRA staff and the IIS community the opportunity to learn a little about each AIRA board member. Every month, we will feature a different board member! This month, we are getting to know board president Mary Woinarowicz from the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services.

Q: What is one thing you would like to say to the IIS community?

We can do hard things! Take time to celebrate all that we have accomplished in the last two years and be proud of the work that we have done.

Q: Tell us about your favorite or worst job in high school or college.

The worst job was when I worked as a sorter for bulk mail at the post office. I had to feed all the magazines and junk mail into the sorter—it was less than riveting.

Q: What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining the AIRA board?

Just do it! It’s a wonderful experience, you get to meet a lot of people, and you get more involved in the IIS community.

Q: Finish this sentence: “Wouldn’t it be great…”

If donuts had zero calories!

Q: What’s one thing you have learned from an AIRA workgroup or committee?

I’ve learned a lot from SISC, like now I know how to read an HL7 message, which is always important.

Q: Favorite childhood Halloween costume?

I was a bumblebee! Best part was my mom had made it big enough so I could have my snowsuit on underneath.

Q: Share a person or experience that influenced your IIS career in a positive way.

The AIRA board and getting involved have been really positive for me and my career. I clearly don’t want to leave it, which is why I keep coming back!

Q: Favorite breakfast or late-night snack food?

Oreos for both!

Q: Is there anything new your organization is working on/toward that you would like to share?

North Dakota just finished developing a really fantastic data quality dashboard through Power BI that has metrics for all of the program managers in our immunization program and data for COVID providers. It encompasses COVID data entry, non-COVID data entry, VFC providers, non-VFC providers. This dashboard will help us keep an eye on what’s going on with our data overall.

Measurement & Improvement: Data at Rest into Assessment

This past September, AIRA and the Measurement for Assessment and Certification Advisory Workgroup (MACAW) invited the IIS community to review and provide comments on the proposed measures and tests to move 45 measures within the Data at Rest (DAR) content area into the Assessment stage of the Measurement and Improvement (M&I) Initiative. As part of this community comment process, which closed on October 17, AIRA hosted a Town Hall/Discovery Session on October 3, attended by over 70 members of the IIS community, and received over 30 comments. AIRA is currently reconciling the comments and will review them with MACAW at its monthly meeting on November 10. Thank you to everyone for your input and participation!
