Event Description:

Background

The Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework was adopted by the Sixty-fourth World Health Assembly on 24 May 2011, following an extensive intergovernmental process that began in 2007. Recognizing the global threat posed by influenza pandemics, Member States developed this innovative mechanism to ensure timely virus sharing and equitable access to benefits, such as vaccines, antivirals, and diagnostics.

The PIP Framework is the first and only global access and benefit-sharing system for public health. To enhance understanding and awareness of the PIP Framework, and its role in advancing equity in pandemic influenza preparedness and response; to highlight its main components; and to engage participants in a discussion on the Framework’s role in strengthening pandemic influenza preparedness and response.

 Objectives

  • Strengthen knowledge and understanding of the PIP Framework, why it is unique and important
  • Explain the PIP Framework access and benefit sharing mechanism for advancing an equitable response to an influenza pandemic;
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of different stakeholders in implementing the PIP Framework.
