Inventory Management and Forecasting for Spare Parts for Walk-In Cold Rooms and Walk-In Freezer Rooms
This guidance document provides a standardized, data-driven approach for managing spare parts of Walk-In Cold Rooms (WICR) and Walk-In Freezer Rooms (WIFR). The aim is to ensure operational reliability, reduce equipment downtime, and optimize resource use across national immunization and health logistics systems. The strategy aims to:
- Guarantee continuous cold chain functionality through proactive spare parts management.
- Promote evidence-based inventory planning and repositioning.
- Strengthen system resilience, cost-efficiency, and sustainability in line with global immunization and health system standards.
This guidance has been developed from the practical experience of the JSI team working closely with the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS), responsible for procuring, managing and distributing all health products, including vaccines, and maintaining the cold chain at national and regional hubs. This document provides guidance for developing a spare parts inventory management strategy, using practical experiences and case studies from Ethiopia.
