Elevating CHWs’ Role in Immunization The Key to Equitable Access and Increased Demand

Vaccination remains one of the most eective ways to prevent illness and disease. Between 2000 and 2023, 18.8 million deaths were averted due to vaccination, and the return on investment is estimated to be US $54 to every US $1 spent on immunization. However, despite the success and cost-eectiveness of immunization in 2024, 14.3 million children globally did not receive any vaccinations, and many others were not fully vaccinated.

In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), there are limited financial and human resources to meet immunization demand. New vaccines for adults, such as HPV, malaria and COVID-19, have expanded immunization needs beyond childhood vaccination, requiring even more resources. Additionally, some LMIC communities have a high degree of vaccine hesitancy, or they must seek health services far from their homes, making a routine vaccination schedule more challenging. At VillageReach, we believe community health workers (CHWs) are an important solution to address these challenges and improve immunization service delivery.
