Report of the subregional workshop on HPV vaccination for people living with HIV, Eastern and Southern Africa, Cape Town, 17 to 19 November 2025
WHO Regional Office for Africa convened a subregional workshop in Cape Town from 17 to 19 November 2025, timed to coincide with the first World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day. Immunization and HIV programme leads from Eswatini, Malawi, South Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zimbabwe met with WHO, Gavi, UNICEF, the Global Fund, the Gates Foundation, Unitaid, EGPAF, VillageReach, the World Bank and researchers working on HPV-HIV integration.
The report covers the epidemiology of the dual HIV and cervical cancer burden in the subregion, emerging evidence and modelling on multi-dose schedules for people living with HIV, the funding landscape, data systems and multi-dose tracking, and country experiences of integrating HPV vaccination into ART clinics, teenage clubs and youth-friendly services. It includes road maps developed by each of the five countries and a partner road map for the steering committee.
Recurring themes include the gap between the single-dose schedule for the general population and the two or three doses that people living with HIV require, the near absence of HPV vaccination data disaggregated by HIV status, and the implications of declining development assistance for health.
