Can immunisation supply chains successfully integrate with central medical store or overall public health supply chains while the immunisation program is still vertical?

In terms of digital systems, our vision at The mSupply Foundation has always been to integrate both immunization and non-immunization supply chains into the one system.

If sufficient consideration is given to the reality of the differences between the immunization and non-immunization verticals in the real world there should be no reason why a single digital system cannot cater for both chains.

We would hope that over time the segregation between the chains would decrease, but a good digital system would help to support both chains on the stages along that journey.

We also see some blurring of the lines of the requirements of digital systems for both chains in the future - for example cold chain has historically primarily been associated with immunization supply chains. However we are now seeing the need for controlled temperature monitoring for non-immunization products too (and not just oxytocin / insulin).

Our aim is to build a digital system (Open mSupply) that will be flexible and useful enough to make the goal of integrating the supply chains much more achievable for countries.

We work in several countries at both the Central Medical Store and National Vaccine Store - my feeling is that most would ultimately want to integrate the supply chains into a single system and it's something we're very keen to support.

You can read a little more about how we're looking to serve the immunization supply chain vertical here: https://msupply.foundation/open-msupply/cold-chain
It's worth noting that the base framework for supporting the immunization supply chain in Open mSupply (ordering / distribution / inventory & logistics management etc) also supports the non-immunization supply chains too.
The idea being that vertical programs can be segregated within the system via configuration (users & roles, permissions, product groupings, facility departments etc) as required, and equally could be de-segregated in the future if desired.
