Resource World Bank Data on Urbanisation and Percentage Population living in slums
Purpose Provides data (most recent results and trends) on poverty, inequality, health and nutrition and world development indicators, including urban slum dwellers (urban, regional, global).
Content Allows exploration of poverty and inequality indicators for countries and regions, as well as country exploration by various income levels- low, lower middle, and upper middle income, and access poverty and inequality data for fragile country groupings. It also identifies percentage of urban population living in slums.
Expected outcomes Data on the percentage of urban population who live as slum dwellers.
Use Does not require user input. Data is available.
Strengths The data portal enables tracking of trends of urbanisation and slum dwelling, which is a valuable input to strategic planning on urban health.
Contraints/Limitations (a) It provides no insights on sub national or city specific rates and trends in urbanisation or slum dwelling.
(b) The data is quite dated (2014).
(c) The data is generally useful for analysing macro level trends at wide time intervals.
Why use it (a) Information on rates and trends in urbanisation and slum dwelling are important for setting strategic directions for urban health planning or for development of urban EPI strategy.
(b) Zero dose and under immunised – improved collection and use of urbanisation data will promote more realistic population denominator estimates and provide an evidence base for pro equity health planning.
Who should use it National, Regional and National Urban health planners, development partners and civil society agencies.
Example criteria this resource could address Can extract contextual information such as data on poverty, or information on percentage population living in slums to identify marginalized populations requiring more outreach.
If available, notes on the development process Much of the data comes from the member countries, and the quality of the global data depends on how well these national statistical systems perform.
