Resource World Bank Poverty & Equity Data Portal
Purpose Comprehensive source of the latest data on poverty, inequality, and shared prosperity.
Content Allows exploration of poverty and inequality indicators for countries and regions, as well as country exploration by various income levels – low, lower middle, and upper middle income, and access poverty and inequality data for fragile country groupings. Country profiles on poverty and equity are also available.
Expected outcomes Poverty and inequality data indicators and profiles which can provide an input into national, regional and global level strategic planning.
Strengths The site provides access to a range of indicators relating to poverty, inequality (Gini index), and gender that can be compared over time, between countries and country groups. The portal generates an inequality brief for each country that covers inequality, median income, growth, shared prosperity (Annualized Consumption Growth per capita bottom 40%).
Contraints/Limitations (a) As a data base, the information is limited to a current and historical presentation of relevant poverty and equity data but cannot explain the underlying determinants driving poverty and inequality.
(b) The data available does not cover every year or might not be routinely collected/published, so it can be difficult to determine the accuracy of older data.
(c) The data is quite dated (2014).
(d) The data is generally useful for analysing macro level trends at wide time intervals.
Why use it (a) Provides a strategic national, regional and global context for pro equity immunisation and PHC planning.
(b) Can provide background strategic context for EPI during EPI reviews or multiyear planning situation analyses.
Who should use it Global, Regional and National planners, policy makers, development agencies and civil society agencies. Multiple country analysis should be of value to global and regional planners in setting long term strategy for coverage and inequity reductions.
