Resource Lot Quality Assurance during Polio SIA
Purpose Provides an overview of the Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) methodology. LQAS is a rapid survey method to assess the quality of vaccination coverage following supplementary immunization activities (SIA) in pre-defined areas such as a health district (known as “lots”), using a small sample size.
Content Details of methodology such as sample selection, planning, implementation, and training. A set of annexes provide tools such as questionnaires, planning and sampling.
Expected outcomes Provides an interpretation framework which enables users to conclude whether the assessment indicates “pass” , “intermediate” or “fail”, with “fail” prompting decisions for repeat of an SIA.
Strengths A Field Manual and provides an operational tool that will help users to make decisions about whether, where and how to conduct a clustered-LQAS survey to evaluate oral polio vaccine (OPV) campaign coverage
Contraints/Limitations (a) Due to the relatively small sample size and clustering approach, there is a chance of misclassification.
(b) if the lot is too large and heterogenic in coverage, the outcome of LQAS may not be applicable to the entire lot (e.g., districts).
(c) LQAS does not provide an exact coverage estimate.
(d) Being a household survey, LQAS reflects the coverage level of children who are at home at the time of the survey.
Why use it Helps users to make decisions about whether, where and how to conduct a clustered-LQAS survey to evaluate oral polio vaccine (OPV) campaign coverage.
Who should use it This field manual is intended for national and local-level officers involved in polio vaccination activities in the framework of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.
