WHY GENDER MATTERS FOR IMMUNIZATION: SECOND WEBINAR SERIES

The Immunization Agenda 2030 envisions a world where everyone, everywhere, at every age, fully benefits from vaccines to improve health and well-being. Gender-related barriers and gender inequality can prevent people, both male and female, from getting vaccinated. The goal of gender equality is to ensure that everyone has the same chances and opportunities to access and benefit from immunization services.

Building upon the first webinar series organized in 2023 (https://www.technet-21.org/en/topics/programme-management/gender-and-immunization), this second series of webinars, based on the joint WHO, UNICEF and Gavi guidance document Why Gender Matters: IA2030 (https://www.who.int/publications/i/item/9789240033948), aims to further improve awareness and understanding of how gender-related barriers impact immunization. The series will focus on examples and best practices of gender-responsive programming to improve coverage and equity from around the world.

Sessions will be in English, with simultaneous translation into French.

Second webinar session: Empower and collaborate with civil society and change agents to overcome gender barriers

Civil society, grassroots organizations and change agents are powerful allies in overcoming gender barriers and increasing demand for immunization services. They often work in the hardest-to-reach communities and have the local expertise to disseminate immunization programme information. The second webinar of this series will showcase two promising approaches that aim to identify and reach zero-dose children and improve access to health services through the involvement of women's organizations in urban Mali and India.

Fist webinar session: Gender responsive actions to improve the quality, accessibility, and availability of services

Immunization programmes are sometimes designed without the meaningful involvement of women and girls and the communities they are part of, thus limiting their agency in the journey towards immunization. Ahead of International Women’s Day, the first webinar of this series will showcase two different examples of meaningful inclusion of women and girls through innovative strategies that put caregivers and health care providers at the centre of their design.

It’s an exciting time for new TB vaccine development! Several vaccine candidates are in late stage product development, with Phase III trial data available as early as 2024 and potential licensure and use in some countries in the near future. However, none of the candidates are expected to be a ‘silver bullet’ and there are differences in terms of trial design, primary endpoint, target population, and product attributes. Without a known correlate of protection, the effect of HIV status, infection status, age and geography on vaccine efficacy must be determined for each vaccine. We also need to ensure that the early pipeline remains robust in terms of new antigenic targets and platforms, and that new tools are developed to effectively evaluate their potential efficacy.

This webinar will bring together experts to discuss the status of TB vaccine development across the value chain, from articulation of the public health and economic need for new TB vaccines, through the status and strategies for product development, to the considerations for approval, policy recommendation and use.
