AIRA Weekly Update | March 1, 2023

MARCH 1, 2023

Happy Wednesday. It’s hard to believe we are already in March! The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met February 22–24, it was a long meeting with lots of topics. In addition to reviewing data on many vaccines, discussions were had regarding the Inflation Reduction Act as well as the surge in respiratory disease that took place this past fall. For more information, please review the meeting highlights article below.

Monday, AIRA’s Education and Outreach team hosted the highly anticipated IIS 101 Discovery Session. We were thrilled by the number of participants. With spring just around the corner, it won’t be long until we head to San Diego, California, for the AIRA 2023 National Meeting. Our hotel room block is filling up quickly, so be sure to reserve your hotel room, register to attend, and check out the Agenda At-A-Glance.

And because we don’t want any opportunities to go unnoticed, be sure to check out our recently posted (and closing soon) AIRA job opportunities.

Wishing you a marvelous March!

Rebecca Coyle, MSEd
Executive Director

An outbreak is defined by public health authorities; a single case may be considered an mpox outbreak.

Over the course of the three-day meeting, the committee discussed the following:

The Virginia Department of Health is interested in learning how many data exchange/interoperability specialists work within each IIS program. The titles of these individuals may vary by jurisdiction, but these staff are responsible for working with individual providers, large health systems, and EMR vendors to set up, test, troubleshoot, maintain, and upgrade HL7 VXU and QBP messaging.

THE MONTHLIES

AIRA Board Spotlight

The board spotlight provides both AIRA staff and the IIS community the opportunity to learn a little about each AIRA board member. Every month, we will feature a different board member! This month, we are getting to know director David Crowell from the Nevada State Department of Health and Human Services.

Q: What is one thing you would like to say to the IIS community?

Keep going! We are increasing our reach and becoming a large player in the health community, so keep up the hard work on immunizations.

Q: Tell us about your favorite or worst high school or college job.

My worst job was being a summer cashier at K-Mart. It was really boring for me as a kid.

Q: What’s your favorite part of being a member of the board?

Growth and learning. I am a lifelong learner. I love to learn anything and everything about what I’m doing, and the AIRA board helps me expand my knowledge.

Q: What’s one thrilling thing you have done in your life?

I went snorkeling with sharks and stingrays in Belize!

Q: What’s one thing you have learned from an AIRA workgroup or committee?

I have learned my entire job and everything I know about HL7 from AIRA workgroups and committees.

Q: What was your favorite way to spend a Saturday as a kid?

Morning cartoons, and I still watch them occasionally.

Q: Share a person or experience that positively influenced your IIS career.

Jane Lammer was my predecessor here in Nevada. I knew nothing about HL7 and was honest about this in my interview. She offered to teach me, and between her and AIRA’s workgroups, I have learned everything I know.

Q: If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?

I don’t have a specific one, but a superhero that could fly would be great!

Q: Is there anything new your organization is working on/toward that you would like to share?

We are standing up a data quality unit that focuses on increasing the quality of the data in our system so we can make better use of the data.
