#ICFP2018 Special Edition: Strong Reproductive Health Supply Chains Save Lives

Project Updates

Expanding choice through new product introduction

New and improved contraceptive technologies hold tremendous potential to expand family planning options and choice for women and men around the world. JSI has extensive experience introducing new and next generation family planning products into existing markets. We work at the global, country and community levels  to monitor procurement trends and country demand and support countries in introducing new products by addressing a range of issues from policy to systems. Scaling up IMPACT teams to improve data use and supply reliability

At the heart of the best functioning supply chains are people. Since 2010, JSI has partnered with 10 countries to empower staff to analyze, use, and transform data to improve the performance of their health supply chains through IMPACT Teams. Preliminary results from a retrospective analysis show that IMPACT Teams improve performance, including reducing stockouts and improving supply reliability and reporting thereby helping to ensure family planning products reach women when and where they need them. Mobile technology at the last mile ensures contraceptive availability in Zambia

Through the Scaling Up Family Planning II  (SUFPII) Programme, implemented by Abt Associates and funded by DFID, JSI conducted a supply chain mobile phone pilot to increase last mile availability of contraceptives. The pilot demonstrated how weekly rather than monthly data from remote facilities could help districts better manage contraceptive supply to reduce stockouts and overstocks at the last mile. As a result of the improved accuracy, visibility, and use of supply chain data that remote facilities gained through the introduction of mobile phones, contraceptive availability was improved in these hard to reach communities.

Process + Technology reduces stockouts in Indonesia

JSI is partnering with Indonesia’s National Population & Family Planning Board (BKKBN) through the ‘Right Method, Right Time, My Choice’ project, to ensure women have consistent access to a range of contraceptive options across four provinces. A user-friendly inventory management and monitoring (MIM) tool has been developed to enable a dynamic consumption based resupply system. To facilitate monitoring of supply chain performance, the MIM tool is complemented by strategies to strengthen the timeliness, quality, and use of data through a mentorship program, on the job training, and WhatsApp groups. As a result of these interventions, overall stock out rates of contraceptives in the four regions have been reduced by 47% on average. Learn more.
