When Crises Hit: Supply Chains Matter

Improving the availability of reproductive health products in humanitarian settings

JSI is working with the United Nations Population Fund to ensure the reproductive health (RH) rights of women and girls in humanitarian settings. We developed a global forecasting tool for emergency RH kits, which includes a dashboard to increase data visibility and helps advocate for increased investments in products and supply chains. We are also supporting quantification of emergency RH kits in Bangladesh (Cox Bazar, home to the Rohingya refugees), Jordan, Kenya, and Sierra Leone, and the transition from emergency kits to more sustainable and cost-effective approaches. New inventory management system improves service delivery for refugees

At the request of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Ethiopian Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs, JSI developed and deployed an automated inventory management system to 750 public-sector health centers and hospitals. The system improves medicine management, stock visibility, and ultimately service delivery for nearly 900,000 refugees living in 24 camps. Learn more

Building supply chain capacity helps mitigate risk in emergency settings

With the USAID Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance support, JSI is improving the capacity of donor and nongovernmental agency staff to manage health commodity supply chains in humanitarian crises. Building capacity can lower risk of loss and waste, as well as improve health commodity availability for people affected by emergencies.

As part of this effort, JSI is developing a supply chain manual and course. We welcome partner input; if you are interested, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Emergency preparedness and response

In the United States, JSI works with state and local emergency officials to develop plans and skills-based training programs that respond to community needs in times of crisis. JSI helps clients strengthen capacity including designing and conducting hazard risk assessments, disease surveillance, continuity of operations planning, and medical surge and countermeasure dispensing. In this recent blog, JSI’s director of Health Logistics Edward Wilson looks to the current response in DRC, as well as those elsewhere, for important lessons as we ready for future emergencies. Learn more
