Since the creation of the global stockpile in 2013, more than 5 million doses of oral cholera vaccine (OCV) have been successfully used in various outbreaks and humanitarian emergencies. The use of oral cholera vaccines is an additional tool to the classic cholera control measures: it should be systematically considered in both endemic countries as well as during outbreaks and emergencies.

This July, it was reported that a woman from Washington State in the US had died of measles. It was the first measles death in the country in 12 years and comes after a huge spike in the number of cases of the disease. There is little doubt about what has caused the rise. The 'anti-vax' movement – activists who refuse vaccines believing them to be harmful to children – is vocal, vibrant and virulent. But with their claims proven time and again to be without any scientific basis, why are the 'anti-vaxxers' still going – and apparently growing?

Vaccines are not just for kids - they're for life. It's hard to keep track of all the ways that we protect the people that we love and the things that matter most to us. When we were kids, we learned that protection is important at all ages. Now it’s our turn to teach our kids the value of protection. Vaccines are another way that we can protect our loved ones. In fact vaccines do such a good job that its easy to forget how effective and important they are. Thanks to vaccines smallpox has been completely eradicated - and polio has almost gone too. While measles is almost completely gone in North and South America you and your loved ones are still at risk if you live in Europe.

While the majority of Americans vaccinate their children, there are many parents who selectively choose the vaccines to be given or who decline vaccinations altogether. This Forum event, held a few days after the September 10 airing of the NOVA film Vaccines: Calling the Shots, examined the drivers of public perceptions of vaccinations, the threats that vaccine-preventable illnesses pose, and the steps to be taken to restore trust in one of public health’s greatest weapons against infectious diseases.

Tara Haelle will focus on vaccine hesitancy and vaccine refusal. This is a global health threat that lurks unnoticed until it erupts into unpredictable disease outbreaks that are difficult to contain. She explains what underlies the fear and hesitancy that many people have toward vaccines, why it's not as irrational as some believe, and what's necessary to address it.

Tara Haelle is a freelance science and multimedia journalist who writes regularly at Forbes, NPR, Scientific American, Slate, Medscape, and other U.S.-based publications. She co-wrote “The Informed Parent: A Science-Based Guide to the First Four Years” with science journalist Emily Willingham, and she blogs about science and parenting at Red Wine & Applesauce. She holds a master's in photojournalism from the University of Texas at Austin and has published her images in several publications.

You need a map! Having a current and accurate map can help you plan the delivery of vaccination services, because it shows you all the communities you serve, how many infants and pregnant women are in each community, how far away they are from you, and which mode of transport is required to reach them.
