"Hidden in Plain Sight": Uncovering Gendered Barriers Behind Zero-Dose Children in Haruka Woreda, Afar Region

This poster presentation examines how gendered barriers contributed to zero-dose in Haruka, Afar region, Ethiopia. Gender-related barriers—such as the unintended consequences of post-vaccination symptoms, which often place blame or responsibility on mothers—remain a critical driver of zero-dose status in pastoralist communities like Haruka. Addressing supply-side or logistical gaps alone is insufficient. Without tackling gendered access and decision-making dynamics, immunization programs will continue to leave children behind. Closing the zero-dose gap requires a deliberate shift toward gender-responsive immunization programming.
