POST 00648E : FROM HFC/CFC TO HC-BASED REFRIGERATION Follow-up on Posts 00487E, 00493E, 00500E, 00513E, 00634E, 00638E and 00644E 11 March 2004 ___________________________ Terry Hart (mailto:[log in to unmask]) make some comments on Alejo's contribution in the previous Posting on this topic (Post 00644E). ___________________________ As I mentioned in one of my earlier communications on this subject, IT Power India manages a large program in India to train private sector refrigeration technicians in the techniques of managing Hydro Carbon (and HFC) refrigerants used in domestic refrigerators. So far approximately 7000 technicians have been trained in the last 3 years, thanks partly to WHO contributions to our training center. A reformulated program will shortly be extended to include automotive AC systems also. The issue of safety as well as long term performance was clearly a preoccupation several years back. The situation has evolved substantially over the last 3-5 years and the main barrier encountered in India today relates to authorization to package and market HC refrigerants in small containers suited to the service sector, rather than safety issues related to maintenance. You have correctly pinpointed in your note, the major advantages of HC for small scale applications. I also fully agree with you that HC should not be used for walk-in cold/freezer rooms, and its use should be limited to refrigerator systems of up to 300-liter capacity. One further additional advantage of HC is that it does not require the stringent standards of maintenance required by HFC, hence is much easier for maintenance technicians to handle. Many thanks for your inputs and look forward to discussing this further.
