POST 00696E : GLASS SYRINGES DISPOSAL 12 July 2004
_______________________________
In middle-income countries, a number of vaccines are proposed in pre-filled
single-dose glass syringes. Such countries do not always have the
infrastructures and financial means of rich countries, and experience some
of the same problems as developing countries, i.e. accessibility and poor
development of the private sector. However if the use of this presentation
of vaccines has some advantages in terms of security (limited handling, use
of sterile material), it also has disadvantages such as an increase in the
volume of waste and glass and metal waste disposal.
This last point is of particular concern to us, because both glass and
metal can neither be burnt nor incinerated at average temperature (like in
the DeMonfort). We should be grateful to know the experience of TechNet
members in handling large volumes of glass and metal waste, especially
their disposal.
Thank you.
