PROMPTS: AI-Enabled Messaging to Improve Delivery and Uptake of Immunisation Services in Kenya
The PROMPTS Kenya case study focusses on the implementation of an AI-enabled SMS messaging service dubbed PROMPTS by Jacaranda Health. Through the provision of timely health information to new and expecting mothers, the service attempts to enhance maternal and infant health outcomes, including the uptake of immunisation. In multiple languages, PROMPTS sends SMS messages that are specific to the gestational stage, reminding mothers of health hazards, vaccination schedules, and appointments. This system also allows mothers to submit health-related enquiries through an AI-powered helpdesk, with a focus on urgent matters. In November 2023, PROMPTS had reached more than 2.55 million mothers, operating in 22 Kenyan counties with more than 1,300 health facilities. Utilising real-time data dashboards, the program assists health managers in identifying obstacles, including vaccine stock-outs, and resolving them, thereby enhancing service delivery and resource allocation. Jacaranda Health intends to increase the service's reach to all counties in Kenya and to other countries. The service is partially funded by county governments and is provided by donors.Key outcomes include enhanced immunisation rates, enhanced health-seeking behaviour among mothers, and improved decision-making by health administrators based on real-time data and feedback.
